There's more than enough reason to play as them (at least theoretically, assuming they didn't screw up the controls, etc.), because of their mechanics.
They usually don't have Artes, but they can be harder to stun, their max HP can trend higher, some of them have quick and powerful ranged attacks that require no TP use, quite a number of them are much larger and have wider swings for their weapons/arms/whatever else they attack with, some of them can't be attacked except by a spell or a jumping opponent, they can usually inflict status conditions more easily than the human characters. Tales monsters act much differently from the regular characters, operating on different mechanics. I'm just saying that I think it's still kind of silly even if that's the case.
